The NFC West is accustomed to catching its share of grief, and then some.

Mike Sando: Let’s say Campbell posts a passer rating in the mid-80s and the Raiders back him with a defense ranked in the top 10. The Raiders would take that scenario, no questions asked. The reality, though, is that Campbell’s passer rating last season was 86.4 and the Redskins -- his old team -- fielded a defense ranked 10th in yards allowed. It all added up to a 4-12 record against a weak schedule. I like some of the Raiders’ talent on defense, but 25 teams allowed fewer yards per game last season. It’s a stretch to pencil in Oakland for a No. 10 ranking on defense in 2010 and a greater stretch to say they'd win the NFC West. Williamson: The defense in Oakland is going to improve. The Raiders have added two potential stars in middle linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive end Lamarr Houston, both in the first two rounds of the draft. The run defense has been horrible in recent seasons, but it should be much improved.
Sando: I watched Frank Gore carry twice against the Raiders’ starting defense Saturday night. He gained 58 yards on those runs, and Mike Iupati, the 49ers’ rookie left guard, took out McClain pretty easily on one of those Gore carries. Preseason isn’t much to go on, but Gore probably could have had 150 yards if the 49ers had left him in the game.
Williamson: I can see why the 49ers removed Gore from the game. He’s always getting nicked up and that probably will be the case again this season. Follow me for a minute here. Oakland should easily compete to win eight games. Sure, it is not the stuff of Lions jersey
playoff dreams -- at least in a real division -- and it won’t be enough to unseat San Diego in the AFC West, but this isn’t about the Raiders’ division. It’s about the NFC West, which managed a league-low 12 victories outside the division last season (the AFC West had 18). There is no anchor team in the NFC West, unless you count the sinking Cardinals. San Francisco? Come on. These teams are not markedly better than the Raiders. Arizona is a mess as it enters the post-Kurt Warner era and San Francisco always seems to fall short of its potential. Put Oakland in the NFC West and you’d have your 2010 division favorite.
Sando: There’s no way Campbell would hold up in the NFC West behind that horrible offensive line. The 49ers roughed him up Saturday night (Campbell has a stinger and wrist injury as a result). A week earlier, the 49ers roughed up Brett Favre (the Vikings had to yank him after only four plays). The Cardinals’ defensive front also would mangle Campbell. They feasted upon the Chicago Bears' Jay Cutler when both teams’ starting units were on the field Saturday night. Cutler had zero points, four sacks and two interceptions in five drives. Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell would feast on the Raiders’ offensive line. It'll happen soon enough. The teams meet in Week 3.
Williamson: Let’s get back to the quarterbacks. No legitimate contender in the NFC West has one better than Campbell. Matt Leinart's career is on life support in Arizona and his replacement, Derek Anderson, is the quintessential stop-gap solution. Alex Smith is as fragile as a porcelain vase. Matt Hasselbeck is very much on the back nine of his career and Sam Bradford is just not ready to carry a team on his back. Not this year, at least.
Campbell is the most reliable of all of the above-mentioned quarterbacks heading into this season. He is a smart game manager who is not going to lose games. He will trust his young receivers and his potentially strong running game.
Sando: Granted, the whole Leinart-Anderson debate isn't helping the NFC Broncos jersey
West's credibility. But the coaching in Arizona is solid and the team still has good talent throughout its roster. Jason Campbell might be an upgrade for the Raiders, but the Redskins did bench him during an ugly loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last season. Percy Harvin hoping he's turned the corner
When Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin collapsed Aug. 19, we suggested his long-term future would be in question until doctors got a better handle on the migraine headaches that have plagued him since he was 10 years old. In the eight days that followed, Harvin never practiced. Instead, he spent most of his time enduring unspecified medical tests that didn't conclude until last Friday. The next day, Harvin started and got 14 snaps in the Vikings' preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Alumni revisit unforgettable state baseball record
In my mind, the at-bats were always more dramatic, the throws from the outfield more sure and from the deepest parts of the park and the end time later and later.
But when speaking of football jerseys Germantown's 4-3, record-setting 14-inning WIAA state baseball quarterfinal win over Onalaska in 1986 - the only other time the Warhawks made it to the big dance until their surprise venture two weeks ago - one tends to amplify the facts a little bit and get a little emotional with the memory.
It was the last quarterfinal under the lights at old Regner Park in West Bend, a warm night, with the ivy lush in the last vestiges of a July 30 sun.
But before I engage in too much poetry about this affair, it's good to have someone around who was at the heart of the issue, Germantown pitcher now turned city of Oshkosh Det. Paul Frey, to clarify a few things about this, still the longest game in WIAA state summer baseball history.
"No one really knew the pitching rule back then," he said by phone a couple of weeks ago. "I was actually getting stronger as the game went along, but everybody thought that I had to come out after nine innings but the rule was actually 10.
"The way I felt, I wished I could have gone the entire game."
But not the next day.
"My Dad always told me to ice my arm down after games," Frey said, "but after that one, I could have iced my whole body (I was so sore)."
Lefty surprise
Frey did get stronger as the game went along, mowing down 12 of his last 14 batters including his last five in a row. He finished with 10 strikeouts and six walks.
Onalaska coach Scott Mihalovic was surprised to see Frey, who also beat Brookfield East the previous week in the sectional final.
"I thought their (the Warhawks) coaches said they were going to use a righty," Mihalovic said at the time, "and here he (Frey) comes out, a lefty. We'd seen only one lefty in the last 20 games."
And Frey made the most of his advantage of Dolphins jersey surprise.
"He was really mixing his pitches well," said coach Chuck Ritzenthaler at the time.
Frey had to, because after sophomore first baseman Jay Olszewski cranked a three-run homer over the ivy on an 0-1 pitch in the bottom of the fourth to give the Warhawks a precarious 3-2 lead, the Germantown offense was nowhere to be found for the next 10 innings.
Germantown gave Frey one good chance at the win in the ninth, loading the bases with none out on two walks and an error.
But a short fly couldn't score the winning run and when catcher Todd Talbot (now Dr. Todd Talbot in Frey's neighboring city of Neenah) hit another short fly ball, it was fielded perfectly in center and then gunned home by the Hilltoppers Phil Horman to double up the tagging Olszewski.

As were the remaining four innings as relievers John O'Connell and Mark Chudecke squirmed their way out of jams in the 11th (two runners left on), the 12th (O'Connell threw to Talbot at the plate to nail the go-ahead runner), 13th (missed suicide squeeze, Talbot makes the play at the plate) and 14th (Chudecke stops a liner with a diving effort for the third out and the lead run on third).
To say that home plate umpire and legendary former Sussex Hamilton wrestling coach Bob Longdin was busy that night, would be like saying that traffic on the loop in Chicago on a Friday afternoon is a little tight.

Program gives players broader perspective
The wins piled up, the trophies grew more numerous, and the fundraising became more urgent this summer for the Menomonee Falls U-12 gray Junior Indians baseball team.
The intensity grew when the team turned all their wins and all their fundraising into an historic effort at the 104-squad National Youth Baseball Tournament at Cooperstown Dream Park in New York in July making the Sweet 16 round before falling.
It was the best effort ever of cheap nfl jerseys a Falls team in that annual event.
But for team co-coach Dave Weber, the best moment didn't have anything to do with all that success, it had to do with something that every parent wants to do for their children - give them a better opportunity than they had, which Weber was trying to do for his son, Tyler, who was a member of this squad. There were other father/son relationships on the coaching staff, too, with the same idea.
Fewer opportunities in '80s
Most people in the area know Dave Weber's story, paperboy, athlete, NFL draft choice, coach and worthy Menomonee Falls Athletic Hall of Fame member.
He's also humble as all heck and avoids the spotlight at all costs, remembering his roots every step along the way.
Weber grew up in a time (late 1970s, early 1980s) when there weren't select teams, high-level coaching or road trips to New York for kids in sports. He came up at a time when the Falls Recreation Department threw out the balls and bats and let the kids go at it through things like the Redshirts baseball program (shirts were of different colors as children got older).
"We had fun," said Weber of days gone by, "but it was nothing like we have now."
Indeed, it was a slower pace, a little easier on the parental schedule and pocketbook, but the chance for development wasn't as great.
Fast-forward 25 years, Tyler and his friends have been playing together for three years as part of a two-team program (burgundy and gray). They practice twice-a-week in winter (January-March) and when they get outside, it'll be three times a week.
Parents will shell out close to $300 over the course of the season just for the right to participate (not including travel costs).
They get the attention of a series of Jaguars jersey well-intentioned coaches, frequently people with a lot of baseball experience (like Dave Weber) and so the chance to improve is there.
"The kids put a lot into it," said Weber. "They get out of school, gulp down a sandwich and get to practice."
And because this is the Falls, with a pulse for baseball that rolls as strong as the Menomonee River at the height of the spring runoff, there are high expectations, hence if they put in the time and effort, the kids on these teams will earn the right to take part in the Cooperstown Dream Park Tournament on the grounds of Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame in New York.
Fundraising for three years
But before they can do that, they have to put in even more work and very little of it has to do with catching, hitting or throwing the ball.
"We started fundraising for this trip when they were nine (three years)," Weber said. That included taking advantage of the generosity of Krueger's to open its bowling center for nine bowl-a-thons where the families and the players sought out individuals and companies to sponsor them for amounts large and small.
But to really make the trip possible, other outside sponsors had to be enlisted and that number went well north of 25.
