SAME AS HE EVER WAS Colts Running Back Joseph Addax Judges Himself Same Away Whatever the Circumstance

Colts jersey
INDIANAPOLIS – Joseph Addax said his approach hasn't changed.
Addax, the Colts' fifth-year running back and a football jersey
former Pro Bowl selection, said just as he cared little about statistics and the analysis of those outside the team the past couple of seasons, he has paid little attention to those things lately.
Sure, Addax rushed for nearly 100 yards this past Sunday.
And yes, Addax said he knows there are those who believe he's playing better than ever, but he said while he is enjoying football as much as he ever has – and while he said that may translate to solid play on the field – he said statistics aren't important. He said they weren't important in the past.
And he said putting up impressive ones doesn't change his stance.
“That's the thing – I think people are giving the Colts' running game, and the running back, too much credit,” Addax said Thursday as the Colts (1-1) prepared to play the Denver Broncos (1-1) at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver.
Addax, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons, rushed for 544 yards in 12 games in 2008, then 828 in 15 games last season. Through two games this season, he has rushed 30 times for 136 yards for an average of 4.5 yards per carry.
With backup running back Donald Brown having rushed for 69 yards on 16 carries, the Colts – after finishing 31st and 32nd in the NFL in rushing the past two seasons – rank 18th in the category this season.
The Colts rank second in the NFL in total offense and first in passing.
“We certainly would love to have that kind of balance each and every week, but every week is a little different,” Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said. “Every week depends on the situation. It depends on how the opponent decides to play the game. So we can’t say that week in and week out it is going to be exactly that way.
“We may strive to have as much balance as we would like to have had in that game, but chances are there may be a little compromise between the extremes.”
Addax said that's the reason he puts little importance on statistics, and that his point can be seen in contrasting the Colts' Week Two games the past two seasons. A year ago in Week Two, Addax rushed for 32 yards on six carries – an average for 5.3 yards per carry – against Miami, a game in which the Colts held possession less than a quarter.
On Sunday night, in a victory over the Giants, the Colts controlled the game's momentum and held possession 35:06.
Addax rushed for 92 yards on 20 carries, an average of 4.6 yards per carry.
The difference in the performances, Addax said, came down to opportunity and game circumstance as much as any other factor.
“In-house, we understand we can run the ball,” Addax said. “It's just if we get the opportunities. Early on, I think we're getting those opportunities and making the best out of them.”
Addax’s approach to statistics, as well as his approach on a daily Cowboys jersey
and weekly basis in recent seasons,
Has impressed teammate who says he's a relatively rare running back who plays within the system and worries little about numbers.
“Over the years, he hasn't gotten the opportunities that he probably wanted to have,” offensive tackle Ryan Diem said. “He stuck with it. He hasn't given up on us or the system. He understands that we're going to take advantage of what the defense gives us. If that lends itself to passing a bunch, then he's going to sit in there and block.
“Now that he's gotten the opportunities to run, he's taken advantage of those opportunities. He's doing a great job.”
Addax, who throughout his Colts career has talked more of being a complete running back than just a runner, said early in his fifth season an increased knowledge of the game has allowed him to improve on the field.
“It's my fifth year, and I don't want to say it's coming to me easy, but I'm starting to understand it a lot better,” Addax said. “I'm seeing it clearly. . . . This season, I've started seeing myself into the flow.”
Addax for the past several seasons has said one of his goals is to have complete understanding of the offense – a receiver's role on a given play, a tight end's role, etc.
“I think I'm getting to that point,” he said. “I understand what the defense might do before they actually do it. I understand when I'm one-on-one with a linebacker what he might be thinking. That only happens with time and being patient.
“That's the big thing, not getting discouraged with something maybe going wrong.”
And Addax said while he always has had fun playing football, that knowledge – knowledge that comes with confidence and experience – has made it all the more enjoyable.
“With time, getting older, it's not stress,” he said. “I'm past that learning point, of being a rookie. I'm past trying to get everything where I have to learn on the go. When something new comes in, I can get it quicker.”
And while Addax said he knows observers may judge him and all running backs on statistics, he said he looks at things from what he considers a more realistic point of view. He said he has heard people say that he is “back,” and when discussing it Thursday, he shook his head.
“I never understood that,” Addax said, adding that in another sense, he did understand: “At the same time, I put myself in fans' shoes. I was never mad about that, but I have to keep a level head and understand what's going on, which I do. That's kind of how I go about it.
“You look at it in different ways. You look at it in the playoffs and the Super Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Bowl (last season). We had the chance to run, and we were able to do it. It's not so much that we can't do it. It's just when we get the opportunity, I think we make the most of it.
“We're kind of making a statement early on that whoever is saying the Colts can't run, I think we're trying to prove them wrong week-by-week.”

Bills S Whitener tired of team being a punch line

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Having opened the season with two dreadful losses, Buffalo Bills safety Donate Whitener is tired of his team already being used as a punch line.
Whitener expressed his displeasure this week after saying he witnessed Green Bay players laughing at the Bills along the sideline during the Packers' 34-7 win last Sunday. And Whitener’s all too familiar with the Patriots, saying their players have poked fun at the Bills during the course of cheap nfl jerseys
New England's 13-game win streak.
''Grown men laughing at other grown men on the football field. That happened toward the end of the ball game last week,'' Whitener said. ''And it happens every time we play New England.''
Of course, Whitener noted, there's only one way to stop the jokes: win.
And for Whitener, that stinging feeling of being laughed at - as much as being reminded of Buffalo's drought against New England, which dates to the 2003 season - is enough to motivate him as the Bills prepare to travel to face the AFC East rival Patriots (1-1) on Sunday.
''We don't like it,'' the fifth-year player said. ''We need to stop that. And we look forward to stopping it.''
That's proven difficult for a team that hasn't been able to stop New England or most any other team since the 2000 season. It's a 10-year stretch, in which the Bills are 2-18 against the Patriots, have failed to make the playoffs and have enjoyed only one winning campaign, in 2004.
And things aren't looking up this year, with Buffalo off to its fourth 0-2 start since 2001 and going through yet another quarterback shuffle after Trent Edwards was benched and Ryan Fitzpatrick was handed the starting job this week.
In only his first season, Bills coach Chan Gaily is aware of the team's poor history against the Patriots, but he declined to mention it to his players.
''It has nothing to do with this year,'' Gaily said.
As for the Bills getting laughed at, Gaily didn't know anything Dallas Cowboys jersey
about that. But he did like how it's motivated Whitener.
''That's exactly the attitude we want everybody to have,'' Gaily said. ''You have to walk around with that kind of competitive edge about you.''
Though Gaily doesn't say it, Whitener believes the coach has the same edge.
''I know he wants to be the first to go up there and stop this streak,'' Whitener said. ''He wants to show he's a good football coach and show that his team is moving in the right direction. And those are all the questions that will be answered if we go up there and get a win against New England.''
It's been so long since the Bills have defeated New England, there are only four players left on Buffalo's roster - linebacker Chris Kelsey, cornerback Terrence McGee, punter Brian Moorman and kicker Rain Liddell - who were on the team that scored a 31-0 victory in 2003.
''It obviously eats at you,'' Kelsey said. ''You want to win games. And when you have a losing streak to one particular team, it makes it even worse. It's always in the back of our minds.''
The Bills have lost games in a variety of ways to New England. There have been blowouts, like the 56-10 primetime game in 2007, and close calls, like when Buffalo squandered an 11-point lead in the final two minutes to open last season.
Safety George Wilson can only wonder what would have happened had the Bills won that game.
''Would that change the whole mentality of our team? Would that change the way our season ended up?'' Wilson said. ''It leaves a lot of questions of what that game could've done for the psyche of this team.''
It might have even put an end to the jokes.
''Nobody wants to be laughed at when you're out there,'' Wilson said. ''But you can't really be mad at (others) because we have control over that. We have to perform better so we don't become the laughingstock of the NFL.''
NOTES: LG Andy Levite returned to practice Thursday wearing Chargers jersey
a protective collar after he hurt his neck last weekend. Coach Gaily expects Levite to play Sunday. ... Gaily said LB Keith Ellison ''dinged'' his knee in practice but expects him to be fine. Ellison is starting in place of Paul Posluszny's who's out with a sprained right knee. ... During the Patriots' 13-game win streak, they've scored wins over five starting quarterbacks.

24 sep 10 Ortiz homers, has 4 RBIs to carry Red Sox 6-1

Indianapolis Colts jersey
BOSTON (AP)—After a slow start, David Ortiz(notes) has put up the statistics to quiet his critics again this season.
Ortiz hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, John nfl throwback jerseys
Lackey(notes) ended a career-worst four-game losing streak and the Boston Red Sox avoided a three-game sweep with a 6-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.
Coming off a miserable April for the second straight year, Ortiz has produced a strong season again after questions swirled about his career possibly being over.
“Well documented,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of Ortiz’s slow start. “For some it was probably after his third at-bat. He’s kind of swung his way into being one of the top hitters in the league again.”
Ortiz hit his 31st homer of the season on Monday and raised his RBI total to 96. He had five straight 100-plus RBI seasons for the Red Sox from 2003-07, and had 99 last year.
“I knew I was going to hit, that’s what I know how to do,” said Ortiz, who hit just .143 with one homer and four RBIs in April.
“Things didn’t start out the way people expect,” he said. “It’s a long season. People thought I was done. April is only one month. I work hard. I know how to put myself together.”
Last season, he hit only .230 with no homers and 12 RBIs in April.
Now the question is: will the club pick up the final year of his contract, a $12.5 million option for next season?
“I don’t know,” he said.
Josh Reddick(notes) also homered for Boston—his first of the season—as the Red Sox avoided being swept in Fenway Park by the Orioles for the first time since 1994. Boston has been swept at home twice this season.
The Orioles lost for just the fifth time in 17 games.
Lackey (13-11), who had lost four straight starts for the first time in his career, pitched seven innings. He allowed one run and five hits and struck out four.
The veteran right-hander, signed as a free agent to a $82.5-million, five-year deal during the offseason, was expected to be a top of the rotation pitcher, but he has struggled with inconsistency this season. He’s allowed five or more runs in nearly one-third of his starts.
Ortiz hit his three-run homer into the Red Sox bullpen off Steelers jersey
Kevin Millwood(notes) (3-16) to push Boston ahead 3-1 in the fourth inning.
“That actually wasn’t a terrible pitch,” Millwood said. “I threw it pretty close to where I wanted to. On that, you just tip your cap and move on.”
Reddick’s deep drive into the right-field seats made it 4-1 in the fifth.
Millwood, who has the most losses in the American League, gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings.
“We didn’t have many opportunities. I thought their pitcher was carrying a good fastball early,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “You can see when a guy throws that many fastballs early. You can see when a guy throws that many fastballs early in a game, he has confidence in it.”
Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon(notes) pitched a one-hit ninth, striking out three, one night after allowing four runs in a non-save situation.
The Red Sox chased Millwood with two runs in the sixth. Ortiz’s RBI single made it 5-1. Adrian Beltre(notes) added an RBI double off reliever David Hernandez(notes).
Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Ty Wigginton’s(notes) RBI double.
NOTES: The teams split the season series 9-9. … The Red Sox were swept at home by Tampa Bay in April and the White Sox earlier this month. … Lackey went over 200 innings for the fifth time in his career. … Showalter announced most of his rotation for this weekend in Toronto: RHP Chris Tillman(notes) will start Friday, Jeremy Guthrie(notes) on Saturday, but he was still undecided for Sunday. … Boston’s Ryan Kalish(notes) shattered his bat on a single to right and the end went flying about 10 rows back behind the Red Sox on-deck Vikings jersey
circle, where it was caught by a fan. … Baltimore’s Nick Markakis(notes) has 43 doubles this year; his fourth straight year with at least that many. He’s just the third player in major league history to accomplish that feat. Hall of Famers Joe Medwick (1935-39) and Tris Speaker (1920-23) are the others. … Boston 3B Adrian Beltre needs one RBI for his second career 100-RBI season. The other came with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004.

From the Couch: Promos spoil the game

Cowboys jersey
To paraphrase an old joke about hockey, I watched hours of promotion for new primetime TV shows over the weekend, and it was rudely interrupted by football.
Without entirely falling victim to gender stereotypes, men make up the football jerseys
primary audience for football, which explains all those mouth-watering beer ads. Women, by contrast, watch a disproportionate share of primetime television, and — according to Nielsen data — are far more likely to commit to series.
As you might have heard, the new TV season officially begins this week, which has ratcheted up promotion for new and returning programs to frenzied levels. Yet the relatively modern wrinkle that drives me batty is having announcers read plugs for the shows in the middle of games, occasionally pretending as if they’re just dying to rush home and watch them.
Any audience is precious these days, and football draws a ton of viewers. As a consequence, football fans can’t be allowed to enjoy whatever game it is they’re watching in peace. Indeed, because the networks pay so much for football, they have to help justify that expense by using these expansive showcases as a platform to advertise (and advertise some more) their entertainment lineups.
Simply from a practical standpoint, I question the wisdom of allocating promotional time to programs with scant male appeal — ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” or “Grey’s Anatomy,” say — along with the benefits of having play-by-play men handle those chores.
It goes without saying an announcer’s job now includes reading an ungodly amount of ad copy during games. Still, there are those blurbs that make sense — such as “Stay tuned for the Sprint halftime show,” or watch the big college football showdown this Saturday — and those that sound faintly ridiculous.
“We’re told no one loves the thrill of a chase more than U.S. Marshal Annie Frost,” a miserable-sounding Al Michaels said about NBC’s new series “Chase” during “Sunday Night Football,” leaving you to wonder who told him that.
Later, the announcer offered with about as much conviction, “’The Event’ is almost here. You’ll want to see it.” Maybe you will, but I suspect Michaels doesn’t give a rip about it.
He’s hardly alone. CBS seems to toss out more in-game pitches than anybody, forcing the San Diego Chargers jersey
likes of Greg Gumbel (“There’s more to love with the new comedy ‘Mike & Molly’”), Jim Nantz and Verne Lundquist to tout shows it’s hard envisioning them watching.
During the Florida vs. Tennessee game on Saturday, Lundquist delivered spiels for the new sitcom pronounced “Bleep My Dad Says” and “The Big Bang Theory,” even though the 70-year-old announcer probably isn’t part of the target audience the network had in mind.
“Catch the wave,” Nantz enthused about “Hawaii Five-0” on Sunday, prompting color man Phil Simms to add weakly, “I liked that show when I was a kid,” which would be great if CBS wasn’t doing all it could to push the notion that this flashy update isn’t your father’s “Five-0.”
To his credit, Joe Buck played it straight by talking up FOX’s new Monday tandem of “Lone Star” and “House,” but the copy as written — “An all-new season of shocks, surprises and a premiere that will have everyone talking” — nearly tied even his golden tongue into knots.
Admittedly, this might sound like a silly pet peeve, but the practice is emblematic of a more irritating trend — the belief (and certainly the hope) fans are so addicted to their preferred sports that no amount of embedded promotion will chase them away. Besides, football ratings are through the roof this season, so it’s easy to conclude viewers don’t resent the steady downpour.
Maybe they’re right, but I doubt I’m the only one annoyed by it.
So let’s make a deal: If the networks take pity on their announcers Chicago Bears jersey
and stop making them read stupid ad copy for their shows, those of us who just want to watch some football will agree to say less bleep about you.

Braylon Edwards arrested on DWI charge

Cowboys jersey
New York Jets star wide receiver Braylon Edwards told a police officer he'd been partying and drinking before being pulled over in his luxury SUV, but he suggested letting him leave the car and go home, prosecutors said as he was arraigned Tuesday on drunken-driving charges.
A solemn Edwards was released without bail in a case that could nfl jerseys
compound his legal troubles while he's on probation after a fracas in Cleveland last year. He declined to discuss the drunken-driving arrest as he left a Manhattan courthouse, thronged by reporters.
''There will be plenty of time to talk. I'll address everybody,'' said Edwards, wearing a black T-shirt and fashionably torn gray jeans.
Defense lawyer Peter M. Frankel said Edwards was exhausted and focused on getting back to his team.
''Obviously, this is very difficult for him,'' Frankel said. ''Without question, absolutely, he understands the seriousness of the situation, and he is committed to getting back on the football field and doing what he does best for the Jets.''
A breath test showed Edwards had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit after he was stopped on Manhattan's West Side around 5 a.m. Tuesday, prosecutors said. Chief police spokesman Paul Browne said officers on the lookout for such violations as overly tinted windows stopped Edwards because his Land Rover's windows were too dark and then noticed a strong smell of alcohol.
Authorities said there were four other people in the SUV, and the Jets confirmed Tuesday that starting left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and defensive end Vernon Gholston were among them. Neither of those players was charged.
Edwards told an officer he'd had ''a couple of drinks,'' the last about an hour before, assistant district attorney Alyssa Gunther said.
''We were coming from a party. How about if I just leave the car and take a cab and go home?'' he asked, according to Gunther.
Edwards also quizzed the officer about why he wasn't first given a field sobriety test, saying ''they do it in Michigan,'' where he was a college standout, and questioned the basis for his arrest, Gunther said.
''Why was I stopped for having tints if my driving didn't lead you to 49ers jersey
believe I was drunk driving?'' Edwards asked, according to prosecutors.
It's unclear where Edwards was coming from or going. Teammate Jerricho Cotchery told WFAN-AM Tuesday morning that Edwards and other Jets had attended a Manhattan event Monday night for Cotchery's nonprofit foundation benefiting underprivileged youths.
Edwards was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and driving while impaired, a violation. He's due back in court Nov. 9. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.
While awaiting the outcome of the New York case, Edwards may have to return Cleveland to face a possible probation violation, which could carry jail time. The Cleveland Municipal Court judge handling his case has been notified of his New York arrest, court spokesman Ed Ferenc said.
In January, Edwards was placed on probation for 18 months after pleading no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct; he'd been accused of punching a friend of NBA star LeBron James outside a Cleveland nightclub. The Cleveland Browns traded Edwards to the Jets two days after the October nightclub encounter.
Edwards also could be in line for an NFL suspension for violations of league policies on alcohol and player conduct.
The NFL had no comment, but Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said Edwards had shown poor judgment.
''We are very disappointed in Braylon's actions this morning,'' Tannenbaum said in a statement. ''We are reviewing the information with the league and will impose the appropriate disciplinary measures.''
Tannenbaum noted that the Jets provide players with the option of calling for a driver to take them home if they are out having drinks.
Edwards had a big game for the Jets in their 28-14 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, catching five passes, including a touchdown and two-point conversion. He was penalized for taunting - he danced in front of the defensive back covering him - after his 10-yard TD catch, and coach Rex Ryan Saints jersey
clearly wasn't happy on the sideline, shaking his head.
The former first-round pick said during the Jets' playoff run last season that he wanted to finish his career in New York. He signed a contract tender with the Jets in March worth $6.1 million and will be a free agent after this season.

Pirates hold on to snap losing streak

Cowboys jersey
Zach Duke held the New York Mets to one run and Lastings Milledge and Jose Tabata each hit solo home runs to give the Pirates a 2-1 victory at PNC Park today.
It was Duke's first win of August (6-12 overall) and the nfl jerseys
Pirates' first win since last Monday, snapping a five-game losing streak. Joel Hanrahan earned his second save of the season.
Mets left-hander Johan Santana held the Pirates to no hits through four innings before Pedro Alvarez singled to lead off the fifth. Two batters later, Milledge homered to tie the game and Tabata gave the Pirates the lead in the sixth.
Rookie Bumgarner gets pounded for eight runs
The Giants lost Wednesday on Joey Votto's ground-ball single in the 12th inning, but that was a paint scratch compared with the fender dents the Cincinnati Reds inflicted on Madison Bumgarner.
Bumgarner, a 21-year-old rookie, got pounded for a career-high eight runs (seven earned) in 2 2/3 innings and became the first Giant since 1999 to allow three home runs in the first inning.
The last time that happened, Joe Nathan was the pitcher in a game at Arizona, and current Giants bullpen coach Mark Gardner pitched four innings of relief. Dusty Baker, now the Reds' manager, was chewing toothpicks in a Giants uniform.
Bumgarner's inexperience was most glaring on his final pitch. He had just given up a Chargers jersey
two-run triple to Drew Stubbs and threw high and wide to No. 8 hitter Paul Janish, perhaps thinking he had seen a sign for an intentional walk.
But manager Bruce Bochy said he hadn't ordered a walk, and Bumgarner's pitch sailed to the screen. Catcher Buster Posey recovered it quickly and threw to Bumgarner, who tagged Stubbs, but the ball squirted out of his glove as he tried to present it to umpire John Hirschbeck. Replays appeared to show Bumgarner had possession when he applied the tag.
"That turned out to be a big run," said Bochy, who argued the play.
With his double in the second inning, Freddy Sanchez had nine hits over a span of 10 at-bats. He grounded into a double play in his next trip.
Aubrey Huff grabbed his wrist in agony after his glove hand smacked Janish in the third inning, but Huff said it was a momentary stinger and he was fine.
Sensational prospect Brandon Belt made his debut with Triple-A Fresno after the Giants promoted Bears jersey
the hard-hitting first baseman/outfielder from Double-A Richmond.

Jeffress journey reaches top | NOTES Pitcher started season suspended

Cowboys jersey
Cincinnati - The season became an unexpected journey for right-hander Jeremy Jeffress.
The Milwaukee Brewers' 2006 first-round draft cheap nfl jerseys
pick missed the first two months while finishing a 100-game suspension for testing positive a third time for marijuana.
He then was assigned to low Class A Wisconsin, moving up to high Class A Brevard County and eventually Class AA Huntsville. Then the big leagues. "I'm on cloud nine right now," Jeffress said Wednesday after reporting to the Brewers as a September callup.
"It was a hope and prayer (to come up). It's a great opportunity.
I couldn't even stand up when I first heard it.
"It was big steps, back on the mound, coming off the suspension. A great learning experience. I've been to the bottom and I worked my way back to the top. I thank everybody that stuck behind me." The Brewers put Jeffress, 22, on their 40-man roster June 29, some two months before necessary. They called it a reward for good behavior coming off the suspension, but it also protected him from a lifetime ban should he test positive for marijuana again.
Jeffress knew there would be skeptics who expected him to lapse back into marijuana use.
"I've been doing great, staying clean," he said. "The temptation was there, but nothing can be greater than playing baseball for a living. This is what I love to do. The only way I can (stop speculation) is to prove them wrong." Jeffress was converted from starting to relief to give him a daily focus coming off the suspension. He said he has enjoyed the new role.
"I actually love it," said Jeffress, who later made his debut with a scoreless eighth inning in a 6-1 loss to Cincinnati.
"I would love to stay in the pen in any role they'd have me do. I know I can do it and succeed. I come to the field every day ready to throw." Manager Ken Macha said Jeffress would be used exclusively in relief in September but could return to a starting role in 2011.
"I don't think either option is set in concrete or eliminated," said Macha. Gamel will sit: Third base prospect Mat Gamel, who also joined the club, was swinging a hot bat at Nashville (.302, 13 HRs, 67 RBI in 82 games) but probably won't see much action.
Third baseman Casey McGehee has a shot at 100 RBI, first baseman Prince Fielder never sits out Indianapolis Colts jersey
and rightfielder Corey Hart also has a shot at 100 RBI.
Gamel made two starts at first and five in right for Nashville over the past few weeks. There has been speculation he might move to first next year if Fielder is traded over the winter for pitching, but Gamel said he preferred right field.
"It was a lot easier for me out there than it was at first (base)," he said. "It's definitely a lot less stressful. "It's tougher (at first base) than people think. First ain't easy. I have a lot more respect for those guys knowing what they do now." Making a U-turn: Leftfielder Ryan Braun batted.424 in August, the third-highest average in club history for a calendar month. In July, he batted.200, the lowest monthly average of his career. So, how did Braun go from batting.200 one month to.424 the next? "There are a lot of things that factor into it," said Braun. "I know exactly what happened (in July). I'm not going to get into it because it'll just sound like an excuse." That made it sound as if Braun was not 100% healthy in July, but he declined to address that issue.
"You just continue to believe in the process," he said. "You can't always focus on results. It's a game where you have no control over results. I was all right (in July). It's a long year. After a few years you have a track record and you're going to be somewhat close to what you've done in the past (at season's end) whether you start off good or bad.
"I think everybody ends up somewhere close to what they usually do, assuming they're able to stay healthy. It all depends how you respond to adversity. I'm very proud of what I did last month." Champs in Arizona: The rookie-level Arizona Brewers claimed the Arizona League championship with a 10-8 win over the Arizona Reds on Tuesday night at Maryvale Baseball Park in a one-game final.
Left-hander Charly Bashara and second baseman Nick Shaw were named to the league's Dallas Cowboys jersey
all-star team, and Tony Diggs was named the Arizona League manager of the year.

Winning is costly for Rays

Cowboys jersey
You can field a lousy team in pro sports and still make money, sometimes even more than with a great team.
We've always known that. Anyone in Tampa Bay knows the Book of football jersey
Culverhouse.
Back to losing, and that brings us to the Rays, who've been anything but. They're battling the Yankees for the best record in baseball.
Gosh, if Stuart Sternberg's team wins the World Series, it could go bust-o.
Documents purported to be Rays' financial figures leaked by a sports website tell us the Rays' 2008 American League pennant winners earned the franchise a $4 million profit - $7.1 million less in profit than the 2007 Rays, who had the worst record in Major League Baseball.
It is fascinating stuff.
Four other baseball teams had financial figures leaked, including the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates, or the "mighty Pittsburgh Pirates" if you look at their spread sheets.
The Pirates, who have 18 straight losing seasons, an American pro sports record, who have thousands of empty seats just like the Rays, made nearly $30 million across 2007 and 2008, thanks to revenue sharing and baseball's smallest payroll.
In that context, the Rays deserve some credit. They could have gone the Pay Less baseball route and been pulling Pirates money in 2008, or last season, or even this season. Shows the fix winning will get you in.
I don't see why a sports owner doesn't have the right to a profit so long as he upholds the unwritten social contract with the community that demands that they try to put a winner on the field. The Rays have done that.
Yes, this money stuff doesn't seem like it has anything to do with the Rays, who are flying high.
Only the club is planning to cut payroll after this season, and didn't do much at the trade Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
deadline, and already has done everything but wave goodbye to Carl Crawford, only the greatest player to this point in team history, who was in left field Monday night in Anaheim, where he might just be an Angel next season. And there's a small matter of a new Rays ballpark ?
It is fascinating stuff.
Look, Sternberg and his workers have worked wonders.
And some of this financial leakage backs up some of what the Rays are saying.
The Rays apparently do have to spend more on marketing than some teams whose data was leaked, like the Angels. You think Village People concerts grow on trees?
And the 2008 data might underscore the notion that the Rays, successful or no, could lose bread.
You can be successful at bargain rates. The Padres are looking to pull away in the NL West. And the Rays are nose to nose with Yankees Inc.
But this money stuff, this profit talk, can't sit well with fans who will be asked to build a new stadium (as Pirates fans did), who sense that, win or lose, these next few months might be the end of this particular Rays team as they know it. How do they block out the money thing? They only know Carl Crawford will be leaving.
Small-market ball is a balancing act. You're about to see how much of Minnesota Vikings jersey
one.
It still beats lousy products turning big profits.
No wonder they're called the Pirates.

Penalty-prone Jets go back to ‘grade school’

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The New York Jets have reacted to their penalty-filled 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
They were flagged 14 times for 125 yards, giving the Ravens six first downs.
Cornerback Antonio Cromartie(notes) was flagged four times.
So, the Jets have gone back to "grade school," according to Jets coach Rex Ryan.
Ten pushups were assessed for any penalty football jerseys
committed during practice.
"With the number of penalties that we had, we just wanted to have something as a reminder - just not talk about it," defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said. "So they would give a little bit more thought to it."
Added Ryan: "I know it's an old high school trick, but sometimes those old high school tricks still work on this level."
OWINGS MILLS, Md.—The Baltimore Ravens have to contend with Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Antwan Odom(notes), one of the top pass rushers in the league.
Odom is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Chicago Bears jersey
performance-enhancing drug policy, but is being allowed to play while he goes through the appeals process.
“Is he going to be in the game?” Harbaugh said. “Darn, I still had my hopes up for that. He’s a premier pass rusher, got to account for him. Got to know where he’s at all times.”
As a rookie last year, Michael Oher(notes) shut down Odom after the veteran entered the game with a league-high eight sacks.
“He’s a good player,” Oher said. “He’s a proven player. You definitely got to come to play.”
Odom ended last season on injured reserve after tearing his Achilles’ tendon.
The Ravens don’t plan to change their offensive line configuration. Marshal Yanda(notes) will remain at right tackle and Chris Chester(notes) will start again at right guard.
Odom wasn’t especially effective in New Orleans Saints jersey
a loss to the New England Patriots last season, but he has the Ravens’ full respect.
“He’s a darn good football player,” Yanda said. “It looks like he’s back and healthy, so he’s a good pass rusher. He gets a bunch of sacks. We need to look out for him and do our best against him.”

Demaryius Thomas expected to make his debut

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Denver Broncos rookie wide receiver Demaryius Thomas(notes) is expected to make his NFL debut Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
Thomas has been sidelined for the entire preseason and the opening game with a foot problem.
"I think he's had two good days of nfl jerseys
practice," coach Josh McDaniels said. "As long as everything goes the way we hope it goes today, I think he'll be ready to roll."
Thomas had foot surgery before the NFL draft, where the Broncos drafted him 22nd overall.
Then, he reinjured his foot.
"We look forward to him playing on Sunday," McDaniels said.
Minnesota Vikings right tackle Phil Loadholt(notes) has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for two plays in the team’s season-opening loss at New Orleans.
Loadholt was docked for a facemask penalty in the second quarter when he grabbed the facemask of Saints linebacker Marvin Mitchell, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Then, after sliding to left tackle in the fourth quarter to take the place of Bryant McKinnie(notes), Loadholt was caught again for a facemask infraction. There was no penalty called but the league doesn’t need a yellow flag to go after a player for a violation.
Tennessee Titans linebacker Stephen Tulloch(notes) was Saints jersey
fined $7,500 by the league office for his horse collar tackle last week.
And Denver Broncos defensive end Ryan McBean(notes) was fined $5,000 for a facemask penalty.
Houston Texans running back Arian Foster(notes) and cornerback Glover Quin(notes) were both fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness.
Plus, New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung(notes) was fined $5,000 for a late hit.
It would have been a heck of a lot easier if Leroy Hill(notes) and Aqib Talib(notes) would have just gotten together on Sunday somewhere and watched games together.
The NFL is investigating whether Hill broke league rules by attending the Seattle Seahawks’ season-opening victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Hill was suspended by the NFL for the first game for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
The same investigation is going on in Tampa Bay regarding Talib. Truly, it’s a little surprising that these franchises would not spell out to the players exactly what their suspensions meant – don’t come to the stadium after a week away from the practice facility.
“I didn't know. I went to the game and I thought I was fine. I was up in the stands, I didn't go on to the field or go in the locker room, nothing like that. I just went to the game to support my teammates," Hill told reporters Friday. "I didn't know it was illegal."
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he was also unaware of San Diego Chargers jersey
the rule but someone in these organizations needs to be accountable for following protocol. Hill is expected to play Sunday and the NFL could resolve the matter next week. At the minimum, this will serve as a good example for players in the future.

Mailbag: Sainz didn’t deserve harassment

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Between the season opener, when I took Kyle Orton(notes) to task, the Ines Sainz story, Vincent Jackson(notes) and the San Francisco 49ers, readers had plenty of reason to react. Here are some of your thoughts from this week:
Methinks Jason is a tad jealous he can’t dress in tight jeans with a sleeveless shirt and get noticed by players in the locker room. Your cheap nfl jerseys
comment that – for all intents and purposes – says Ines Sainz got what she deserved proves that you’re just like that loser Clinton Portis(notes). … You can preface all you want but it’s clear you hold the same thoughts as that loser Portis.
Cryptblade
New York, N.Y.
No, I don’t have the same thoughts as Portis. I have no idea if Sainz or any other woman reporter (aside from Samantha Stevenson) has ever been interested in having a relationship with an athlete. Frankly, I think most women sportswriters are just trying to do their job, just like I am. Most of all, what another journalist thinks or does is not my business unless it becomes news (by way of some legal action or related incident). However, I do know provocative attire from professional attire. I have seen plenty of women in management positions (my wife is a manager at a supermarket) and I have seen plenty of women journalists. Ms. Sainz definitely pushes the boundaries of what is considered professional attire. Again, I don’t have a problem with it. I’m not jealous. Frankly, I couldn’t care less because I don’t aspire to do the kinds of stories Ms. Sainz does. But she obviously does her job well enough to stay employed. Good for her. Furthermore, you can’t compartmentalize your life. If you choose to do revealing swimsuit photos that are obviously done to provoke interest in yourself, you can’t say, “Oh, I did that a week ago, right now I’m this serious professional.” You are the sum total of your actions. If I expect to be taken seriously as a reporter, there are certain things I have to do to maintain that standard. It’s called personal conduct. I don’t drink excessively, I don’t take drugs, I don’t do a lot of things that would reflect poorly upon myself. If, for example, I did take drugs or get in trouble for drinking, I think it would be pretty hard for me to write something about the conduct of other people, regardless of what position I took. At the same time, Ms. Sainz does something to get attention, from how she dresses to doing swimsuit shots to how she does her stories (getting on the shoulders of players). Again, that’s fine. However, getting leered at by players made her “die of embarrassment” as she tweeted? Oh, please. Now, this is not justifying what the players did. As I said, they did the wrong thing, too. However, she’s not innocent, either. This is a case where everybody is wrong.
________________________________________
This comment is going to be critical, but I want to start by saying that I don’t intend this as blame. I just think you need to seriously reconsider something that you perhaps haven’t thought through all the way. When you talk about Ines Sainz being insincere in her embarrassment at how she was treated in the Jets locker room, in the performance of her job, because she has done modeling photos or “used her looks to get attention,” as you put it, you are barely removed from the fallacy of blaming the victim. Whatever she does in another context in no way invites any of Bills jersey
the harassment she endured in this one. You imply that she is not capable of being demeaned or degraded, merely because she modeled or, at another time, was dressed in a way you found overly provocative while covering the Super Bowl. “Don’t act surprised when sometimes attention goes the wrong way” is simply a regrettable statement. It is exactly the argument used to blame rape victims for dressing provocatively. She did not “ask” to be treated this way, and to imply so is to go down a path far beneath a man of your proven intelligence and integrity.
Paul Ketzle
Salt Lake City
The problem with the example you use is she was not raped. There is no justification for rape. It’s an absolute crime. Sexual harassment is a crime that falls into a sad gray area because so many people act like idiots when they’re at work. However, if you use the example of a woman dancing provocatively in a club and she gets attention, such as hoots and hollers or leering men, to some extent she was provoking reaction. The same goes for entertainers of all kinds. They are looking to attract attention. That’s how they make money. In the case of Sainz, she has danced on the razor’s edge between trying to attract attention with her body and saying she’s a professional reporter. At a certain point, you have to say, “Ines, what are you trying to be, a swimsuit model or a reporter?” You can’t really mix both and be taken seriously. But now she’s aghast, embarrassed and uncomfortable when players don’t take her seriously? Trust me, the players are wrong, just as workplace harassment is wrong. But for her to be surprised she got attention – and worse, become the face of women in journalism – is ridiculous. I’m sure she didn’t have a problem when men were staring at her swimsuit photo. I’m sure she didn’t have a problem when she was getting interviews with any player she wanted at the Super Bowl when she wore revealing outfits. Again, that’s her choice. I’m not telling somebody how to do their job. But don’t cry how people view you later on.

The Charo card is more than a little racist. Did you use that when Erin Andrews “Danced with the Stars” or comment on what she wears on the sidelines? I’ve seen her in tight pants and sleeveless shirts. But she still shouldn’t have people peeping at her. This woman shouldn’t be treated any differently just because she is considered attractive. Why Charo? Do you do that for African-Americans when they complain of being treated unfairly or is only that considered racist?
Chris Villareal
Monroe, Mich.
No, it would have been racist to write something like, “The Latin woman card.” The fact that both Charo and Sainz are Latin is coincidental. Fact is, Charo was someone who used her looks to get attention. Sainz is doing the same, to a large extent. She’s setting the bar on how people view her with how she dresses. At least she has on many occasions. As for Erin Andrews, I don’t take her very seriously, either. But the crime that was committed on Andrews is far different than what happened to Sainz. Andrews had her privacy invaded. Sainz got some catcalls. Both are wrong, but you’re comparing a cement mixer to a wheel barrow.

Give Charo credit, she was pretty smart and funny in her day. Very funny on the 49ers jersey

Shakhtar beats Partizan 1-0 in Champions League

Indianapolis Colts jersey
DONETSK, Ukraine (AP)—Shakhtar Donetsk captain Dario Srna’s second-half free kick Wednesday gave the Ukraine champions a 1-0 victory over Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League.
Shakhtar dominated the game and squandered numerous chances in the Group cheap nfl jerseys
H match before Srna drove home a 30-yard free kick in the 71st minute.
Partizan set out to defend aggressively and goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic impressed with several saves. But Shakhtar, through its skillful Brazilian players, played neat attacking football and always looked like winning.
Partizan was limited to a couple of long-range efforts that were easily saved.
Shakhtar made a lively start to the game but only carved out its first chance in the 28th minute: Srna fired a cross into the box, Luis Adriano’s shot on the turn was parried by Stojkovic, who also blocked the rebound from Oleksiy Hai.
Shakhtar turned the pressure up further in the second half, with Srna instrumental.
Brazilian midfielder Jadson was put through on goal in the 55th minute but his shot was easily blocked by Stojkovic.
Srna then beat his man on the right in the 67th minute and Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
played a perfect cross to Luis Adriano in space, but the Brazilian’s header was superbly tipped over by Stojkovic.
Partizan’s Cleo tried a neat chip over goalkeeper Oleksandr Kucher after had missed the ball in the 70th minute in a rare attack for the visitors.
The outstanding Stojkovic was finally beaten by Srna’s powerfully struck free kick into the bottom corner.
A couple of long-range drives from Partizan brought smart saves from Kucher. But Shakhtar looked more likely to add to its lead, with Hai hitting the post in the 90th minute.
DONETSK, Ukraine (AFP) - Shakhtar Donetsk shrugged off the loss of influential Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho to defeat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 in their Champions League Group H opener.
Croatian international Darijo Srna scored the only goal from a direct free-kick on 71 minutes to give the Ukraine side another home win over the Serbs, having defeated them 4-1 in the Europa Leage last season.
Fernandinho will miss the entire group stage after breaking his leg at Minnesota Vikings jersey
Obolon Kyiv on Friday.
Despite that setback, Shakhtar were still too good for a Partizan side who are unbeaten in 37 Serbian Super League matches.

Sharpe on CBS hiatus after restraining order

Steelers jersey
CBS says former NFL player Shannon Sharpe is taking a break from football analysis after a woman obtained a temporary restraining order against him.
A hearing on the order is scheduled for Monday in Atlanta. Documents filed in Fulton County court show Sharpe was ordered not to come within 200 yards of the woman and not to have any contact with her or her family.
The Associated Press is not naming the woman because she nfl jerseys
says Sharpe forced her to have sex with him.
She also says he has threatened her life and is conducting surveillance of her.
LeslieAnne Wade, a spokeswoman for CBS Sports, says the ex-Denver Bronco and Baltimore Raven has decided to step aside as an analyst for NFL Today until the case is resolved. The network says it accepts Sharpe's decision and declined further comment.
The New York Jets have placed nose tackle Kris Jenkins on Indianapolis Colts jersey
injured reserve and signed defensive tackle Howard Green to help replace him.
The move Wednesday gives the Jets some much-needed depth on the defensive line, which took a major hit when Jenkins went down for the season.
An MRI exam revealed Tuesday that Jenkins tore the ACL in his surgically repaired left knee early in the Jets' season-opening 10-9 loss to Baltimore on Monday night. Jenkins missed half of last season after sustaining the same injury.
Green played with the Jets last season, but signed with the Washington Redskins as a free agent. He was among the final cuts by the Redskins on Sept. 4.
Colts safety Bob Sanders is out indefinitely following surgery to repair a torn biceps muscle in his right arm.
The 2007 NFL defensive player of Dallas Cowboys jersey
the year was injured on Houston's first offensive series Sunday when he landed awkwardly on his shoulders.
Sanders was scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion Wednesday. The team issued its statement while players were still practicing.
For now, the Colts have decided to keep Sanders on the active roster though they did sign safety DaJuan Morgan earlier Wednesday. To make room for Morgan, the Colts waived offensive lineman Joe Reitz.

Texans-Redskins Preview

Steelers jersey
Arian Foster put on quite a show last week. As a result, he'll be looking to add to his NFL-leading rushing total Sunday.
Foster and the Texans take on the Washington Redskins with cheap nfl jerseys
Houston looking to go 2-0 for the second time in team history.
Foster rushed for a franchise-record 231 yards and three touchdowns as Houston defeated Indianapolis 34-24 last week. It was the Texans' second win in 17 games against the Colts.
"We heard all offseason that our running game wasn't efficient," said Foster, an undrafted free agent. "You can either let it get to you, or let it get in you, and I feel like we let it get in us, and we used it."
Foster's performance allowed four-time Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson and quarterback Matt Schaub to have quiet days. Johnson had three receptions for 33 yards, while Schaub went 9 of 17 for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Schaub had no problem taking a back seat to the running game.
"I'll take it every single week if that's the outcome," he said.
Tight end Owen Daniels returned after missing the Texans' last eight games of 2009 with a torn ACL. He caught one pass for nine yards.
"He played 40 plays-plus. That's probably a little more than we wanted him to play, but he felt good; he kept going," coach Gary Kubiak told the Texans' official website. "... His knee felt good. I think he's only going to get better each week."
The Texans were 2-0 in 2007, when they went on to finish 8-8.
Washington is also looking for a 2-0 start after defeating Dallas 13-7 last Sunday with the help of a negated touchdown on the last play. Tony Romo's 13-yard pass to Roy Williams in the end zone was disallowed because tackle Alex Barron was whistled for Minnesota Vikings jersey
holding linebacker Brian Orakpo, giving Washington a victorious start in its new era with quarterback McNabb and coach Mike Shanahan.
Now Shanahan would prefer some more scoring. Washington won last week without an offensive touchdown, with cornerback DeAngelo Hall's return of a fumble recovery being the Redskins' only TD.
"Hopefully, 'Shanahan football' will be scoring a few more points," the coach said.
McNabb looked rusty at times, completing 15 of 32 passes for 171 yards. His 46.9 completion percentage was his lowest with at least 30 passing attempts since Sept. 9, 2007.
"There's a new offensive scheme, new personnel, new coaching staff and just different concepts," McNabb told the Redskins' official website. "That was a change for me. I had to really focus, sit down and really put my nose to the playbook and make sure I knew what I was doing."
McNabb came into the game listed as questionable after missing the last two weeks of the preseason with an ankle injury but made it through without issue.
"I think as time goes on with our system, he will be more comfortable with the system, more comfortable with the terminology," Shanahan said. It just comes with playing the position.
"Obviously, he's got a lot of game experience, but there is nothing like calling the plays and executing a different offense in the heat of battle. And in the first game I thought he did a good job."
After butting heads with Shanahan in the preseason, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was not in the starting lineup and didn't have much of an impact, participating in about 16 plays while recording one tackle.
"The situation is what it is,'' he said. "I was on nickel package. I did my job out there."
Haynesworth suffered another setback Wednesday when he was limited in Dallas Cowboys jersey
practice with an ankle injury. His status for Sunday is unclear.
Washington has won both meetings with Houston, taking the most recent meeting 31-15 at Reliant Stadium in 2006.

Manning looking for win after battering in Houston

Steelers jersey
Peyton Manning walked into the Colts locker room Wednesday, stood tall and answered every question.
To the league's four-time MVP, it's just another game week.
He's facing a formidable foe, a familiar quarterback - another Manning - and a defense that poses as many challenges as the one that just beat him up in Houston. To the older brother, it's time to forget about the past.
''I don't really keep a count, I guess,'' Manning said, when football jersey
asked whether he was hit more than usual in the season-opener.
The short answer is yes.
But it's not just the Colts' franchise quarterback in an unusual predicament heading into Manning Bowl II.
Instead of taking an undefeated record into November, as the Colts have four of the five previous seasons, they're 0-1 and in dire need of protecting their home field Sunday. They have lost the division opener for only the second time since the AFC South was established in 2002, and the six-time division champs suddenly find themselves in last place.
Hey, it could be worse.
The relentless battering that Manning took last weekend has been replayed dozens of times on local and national TV and in film rooms in Indianapolis and New York. Fortunately, for the Colts, Manning survived the countless twists and tugs, pushes and shoves to give his offensive line another chance against Eli and the Giants.
''We weren't good enough, flat out, across the board,'' right tackle Ryan Diem said of the line's play. ''We've got to get that corrected. Our No. 1 goal every week is pass protection, to keep him off the ground, to keep him healthy.''
It will be quite a challenge against a Giants defense that has made pressuring quarterbacks a decades-long quest.
No, Lawrence Taylor and Michael Strahan won't be around this Sunday, but new coordinator Perry Fewell has plenty of help.
Former Pro Bowl defensive ends Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck form, perhaps, the best pass-rushing tandem east of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Indianapolis. The third end, Mathias Kiwanuka, is returning to his hometown after posting two sacks against Carolina. In all, the Giants had four sacks last Sunday and knocked Panthers quarterback Matt Moore out of the game with a concussion.
And this week, Fewell might add some new packages to test Manning and his offensive line, which isn't 100 percent.
Left tackle Charlie Johnson finally returned last week after missing 32 days and all four preseason games with a sprained right foot. Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday also started last week, a month after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, and Jamey Richard is expected to make his second career start at left guard.
The combination against Houston didn't work too well. Manning got hit between the shoulder blades, high and low on the same play, even tripped over a teammate as he threw the ball.
Unless the Colts block better, the Giants will likely take the same tack.
''They're very athletic, with a lot of flat out athleticism showing up at all phases: the front, the linebackers, the safeties,'' Manning said. ''There is a lot of speed.''
The defensive strategy is hardly a secret.
For almost all of Manning's 13 NFL seasons, opponents ranging from the Patriots to the Saints have tried to find new ways to keep Manning on the run.
''I can give the defense here all the information that I can and it's all: Can we get to Peyton? Can we knock him down? Can we get to him before he gets the ball out? You can know a route is coming and still not cover it,'' said Jim Sorgi, Manning's former backup who signed with New York during the offseason. ''You have to get lucky. You have to hit him, hit him early and force some turnovers and get them to punt once in a while.''
Few have succeeded.
But if last weekend's game proved anything it was this: The Colts offense isn't the same when Manning gets hit.
While he finished 40 of 57 for 433 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions, a career high for completions and the third-highest yardage total of his career, the Colts tried to protect Manning with quicker passes in the second half and never could catch up to Houston.
This week, the Colts will face a similar defensive style with what they hope will be different results.
''We have pretty high standards in terms of Dallas Cowboys jersey
what we believe and how pass protection should be handled to keep the quarterback off the ground,'' coach Jim Caldwell said Wednesday. ''One time is too many, so he got hit a few times too many and we've got to do a better job this week.''

Jets sign WR Clowney, cut RB Woodhead

Colts jersey

The Jets signed WR David Clowney(notes) and waived RB Danny Woodhead(notes) on Tuesday.
Clowney, who was waived by New York on Sept. 5, has nfl jersey
played in 15 games in two seasons with the Jets. He had 14 catches for 191 yards and a touchdown in 13 games in 2009.
The Packers drafted Clowney in the fifth round of Indianapolis Colts jersey
the 2007 draft.
Woodhead, who was signed in October 2009, played in 10 of the final 11 games and had eight receptions for 87 yards and 15 carries for 64 yards.
The way we see it
QB Mark Sanchez(notes) was just 10-of-21 passing for 74 yards in Monday night's season opener against the Ravens. The Jets could use some help in the passing game, especially as WR Santonio Holmes(notes) serves his suspension. Clowney is a deep threat who can help open Minnesota Vikings jersey

The New York Jets will continue to be under the microscope after the completion of nfl jersey
their "Hard Knocks" series on HBO.
A female reporter for a Mexican television network was made to feel "very uncomfortable" when she visited the Jets' practice Saturday. She was greeted by some catcalls from Jets players in the locker room while she waited to interview Jets QB Mark Sanchez(notes), who is of Dallas Cowboys jersey
Mexican descent.
Ines Sainz of Mexico's TV Azteca, whom the network promotes as both a journalist and a model, expressed her discomfort on her Twitter account and said she had spoken to the league office about the incident.
"I already spoke to the NFL and it will be up to them to decide whether or not there will be consequences!!" she tweeted.
Sainz was in the press box at the Ravens-Jets Monday-night Minnesota Vikings jersey
game but was not seen in the locker room after the game.

49ers know they have to get on track in a hurry

Dallas Cowboys jersey

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—The San Francisco 49ers who were so confident only days ago about their playoff chances and the realistic opportunity to win the NFC West have been brought down a notch.
No touchdowns in an embarrassing 31-6 season-opening loss at nfl throwback jerseys
division rival Seattle. Zero points after halftime. Miscues and poor execution—down to problems getting the offensive plays to quarterback Alex Smith in time. A late Sunday night meeting back at team headquarters led by coach Mike Singletary, who had some brutally honest criticisms of his players after the game.
All this after such high hopes on the heels of a perfect preseason, the franchise’s first unbeaten exhibition campaign since 1992.
“I just felt that after the game some of the comments that I made were very hard comments, very honest comments,” Singletary said Monday. “And I just wanted to make sure that everybody was on the same page and didn’t leave here having conversations in the parking lot and having conversations in the bathroom, not fully understanding what I was saying.
“Because there was only so much time after the game to talk about those things. And while we were on the plane, while we were on the bus, I heard guys saying, ‘Well, coach, that may have been a little too harsh.’ Or, ‘I didn’t understand what you meant by that.’ I said, ‘You know what, we’re going to get together and get this all ironed out so that when we come in today, we can look at the game for what it is as a team and learn from it, put it behind us, and get on to New Orleans.”’
Star linebacker Patrick Willis(notes) didn’t mind Singletary telling it like it is. They all know he’s no-nonsense, fiery and doesn’t settle for anything less than playing to your potential.
Perhaps this team needed a wakeup call of sorts, even if it was only Week 1?
“Coach Sing is coach Sing,” Willis said. “He speaks from his heart, so when he says things sometimes he just says what he feels. Especially at a time like this when there’s a lot of emotion from players, from coach, sometimes things can be misinterpreted. You never know. He just wanted to clear the air.”
The Niners (0-1) know they had better get things straightened out in a hurry with the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints coming to town for a Monday night game next week.
San Francisco’s players said all training camp that the team had learned from its mistakes on the road last season, when the 49ers lost six straight away from home and five in a row by a combined 19 points. It largely cost them a playoff berth and a winning season. They went 8-8.
Some of the same things that hurt them Indianapolis Colts jersey
last season during that stretch showed up again: penalties, miscommunication, mental errors.
“I think he was just disappointed in us,” tight end Delanie Walker(notes) said of Singletary’s postgame remarks. “We had that game and we didn’t finish. All year and all training camp we talked about finishing and we came out in our opener and didn’t finish.”
A big concern is that Smith is not getting the entire play in his ear before the headset cuts off with 15 seconds left on the play clock.
It was enough of a problem Sunday that Singletary is considering bringing offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye down from the booth to the field to give the play directly to Smith, rather than going from Raye through quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson(notes) to Smith. Everybody acknowledges that could be slowing down the process. Take away the middle man and it might make a difference.
In addition, Smith brought up the idea of a wristband he would wear listing the key plays in case he has to improvise or call things himself when he doesn’t get the necessary information from a coach.
“Frustration was definitely the key thing for everybody,” Smith said. “Knowing the expectations we had, and then how the game played out—very frustrating, from the first half to the second half. We couldn’t finish, we let them back in, and then the second half we just continued to dig ourselves deeper. …
“I don’t think you can look at the tape yesterday and say there were any standouts by any means. We all had a hand in this, from every aspect of the game — offense, defense, special teams, players, coaches alike.”
Singletary most certainly will consider every option to get his team on track. He’s even self-evaluating after every win and loss.
Singletary still believes he has a talented, playoff-caliber team with one of the best defenses in the NFL. The Niners still must show it.
“When you talk about confidence, I don’t think all of Minnesota Vikings jersey
a sudden, ‘Oh man, we’re not any good,’ ” Singletary said. “Maybe dumb … but I wouldn’t say we’re not good. I feel we’re going to be a very good football team.”
Notes: WR/returner Ted Ginn Jr.(notes) (sprained knee), LB Manny Lawson(notes) (rib contusion) and OL Chilo Rachal(notes) (stinger) all were listed as day to day. … The Saints have a little extra preparation time, having beaten Minnesota 14-9 in last Thursday night’s NFL opener.

Ilya Kovalchuk’s agent looks back at a long, hot summer

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) wasn't the only high-profile potential 2010 free agent Jay Grossman had as a client.
But one of them, goalie Pekka Rinne(notes), got football jerseys
a deal to remain with the Nashville Predators before the regular season ended—a two-year, $6.8 million contract that looked awfully good for Rinne in hindsight.
Another one, defenseman Anton Volchenkov(notes), was done fairly quickly when Grossman and the New Jersey Devils negotiated a deal on July 1.
The good fortune led to somebody asking Grossman a question on the first day of free agency: "You expect Kovy to be done in a couple hours?" Grossman was asked.
He thought about it for a second.
"Nah, I don't think so," he answered.
Yeah, it didn't happen. Not that day. Not the next day. Kovalchuk wasn't officially signed until 3 in the morning on Sept. 4.
Then, over the weekend, Grossman took his first two days off in the entire summer.
Grossman made a point of staying out of the media during the entire Kovalchuk saga, mostly because he knew surprise twists and turns were possible. But on Tuesday afternoon, he spent some time talking with Sporting News about the process. And it was quite a process.
Grossman on the drawn-out negotiations: "At one point in August, I looked at almost every team and they had 19 or 20 players signed and it's like, ‘Where's the money (for free agents) going to come from?’ That's part of your job to understand what kind of player you're dealing with. On July 7 or 8, there were people who said that we had blown it and missed our opportunity and they were way off the mark … When you have the Hope Diamond, you can afford to be patient."
On getting a major deal done in a tight free-agent market: "It speaks to the value of Indianapolis Colts jersey
the player more than anything. I said that to Kovy even when, as recently as last week, this was dragging on. Before we submitted the second contract to the league, the question was raised: 'Are we going down the right path?' I said, 'Look, nobody is walking away from you.' Nobody did walk away from him. Most of all, New Jersey remained absolutely steadfast and determined in the process."
On the new CBA rules for long-term contracts Kovalchuk's deal established: "(Contracts like Kovalchuk's) don't come along every day. What I can tell you first-hand, from the best possible perspective, if there's no clarity and there's no rules and you don't have a good understanding of the rules, it's almost impossible to make a deal. The fact that they did establish these rules and these guidelines, for the players we have to negotiate moving forward, it's a good thing for them. The last thing anyone wants to do is get caught up in a situation like Ilya did."
On perception that Kovalchuk wanted a deal topping Alex Ovechkin's(notes) contract: "That was never a factor in our decision-making. The only similarity you could raise is they both signed long-term contracts; aside from that I don't think it was any comparison. Kovy and Alex are good friends but I don't think you can compare the situations."
On contract talks with other teams besides New Jersey: "In fairness, we were never really comparing apples to apples. The needs of the Thrashers (before trading Kovalchuk), compared to the needs of the Kings in where they were in the growth and development of their organization … compared to New Jersey, you were never really comparing apples to apples. They were all in much, much different scenarios. What it came down to with New Jersey was the environment they have to win night in and night out."
On reports of an offer from the Islanders: "They inquired. They called, we had some discussions. They had to get to the floor, obviously. We had a number of calls of that type of nature, with teams that would have been interested if we were interested in a specific kind of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
contract. Our objection going in was to put Kovy in one place for the remainder of his career."

Florida Panthers 2010-11 season preview

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Coach: Peter DeBoer
Like the Atlanta Thrashers, the Panthers are hoping a former member of the Chicago Blackhawks front office can resurrect a franchise that has struggled through years of mediocrity.
Former Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon will try nfl jerseys
to rebuild an organization that hasn’t made the playoffs in nine years. And he’ll do it in the same manner he pieced together the team that skated away with the Stanley Cup in June.
“That’s how it worked there, so we’ll stick with it,” Tallon says. “It was a blueprint that was successful, and we’ll obviously try to tweak it and get better at it, but it was a good plan and we’re going to try to use a lot of it. That’s the direction we’re going in.”
The organization's strength remains in goal. In Tomas Vokoun(notes), the Panthers might have the Southeast Division's best goaltender. Vokoun finished the 2009-10 season third in the NHL in save percentage (.925) and is always among the league leaders in shots faced per start.
Vokoun is in the final year of his contract, and Tallon could face an interesting decision if the Panthers don’t step into playoff contention. There would be a demand for Vokoun’s services at the trade deadline, and he would likely bring impact prospects in return.
Another reason Vokoun might not stay in Florida is 20-year-old Swedish phenom Jacob Markstrom(notes). Possibly the top prospect at his position, Markstrom is expected to spend his first season in North America with Rochester of the American Hockey League.
“We’re very solid in goal with the veterans there and with Markstrom as well,” Tallon says. “He’s going to start off slowly in the American Hockey League to get him some games in North America to see how he adjusts.”
Whether Vokoun or Markstrom is the future in net remains to be seen, but there is a nice contingent of young defensemen to deploy in front of them. Dmitry Kulikov(notes), a 2009 first-round pick, went straight to the NHL, and 2010 choice Erik Gudbranson(notes) could do the same. Gudbranson was the No. 3 pick and first defenseman selected in June's draft.
“I don’t have any expectations (for Gudbranson),” Tallon says. “It would be a nice bonus if (he) were able to make our team. We’re in this for the long haul. It is not a sprint, and he’s a big part of our future.”
Dennis Wideman(notes), added in a trade with the Boston Bruins for disappointing forward Nathan Horton(notes), will join veterans Bryan McCabe(notes) and Bryan Allen(notes) as mentors for the young defensemen.
But will the Panthers score enough to complement Vokoun and the defensive corps?
One key addition will be an internal one. Left winger David Booth(notes), a 31-goal scorer two seasons ago, will be back in the lineup after a concussion-marred 2009-10.
“Booth is really good and ready to go,” Tallon says.
Stephen Weiss(notes) has never reached an Minnesota Vikings jersey
elite level but remains the No. 1 center. He will likely play on a line with Booth and Michael Frolik(notes).
Steven Reinprecht(notes) (16 goals, 38 points) is better suited as a No. 3 pivot but will likely center a second line that could include Rostislav Olesz(notes).
Free-agent acquisition Christopher Higgins(notes) was once a consistent 20-goal scorer, but he has had 20 in the past two years combined. Higgins should see time in a top-six role, as could veteran Cory Stillman(notes).
Michael Grabner(notes), part of the deal that sent Keith Ballard(notes) to the Vancouver Canucks, is one of several young forwards who could inject energy and scoring up front. Others include Michal Repik(notes), Kenndal McArdle(notes) and Scott Timmins(notes).
More help could be on the way from a 2010 draft class that boasts 13 prospects, including five of the top 36 picks.
“That’s how you rebuild an organization — by drafting soundly and developing them,” Tallon said.
Hockey fans in south Florida have remained patient and can’t be too excited about another rebuild, but Tallon has proven he can assemble a winner. Whether that happens this season remains to be seen.
“We’re a team that is in transition,” Tallon says. “We’ve added some pieces. We think we have more assets than we did before. We need to keep adding the right pieces and you never know what is going to happen.”

Canucks captaincy: An unending summer of discontent

Dallas Cowboys jersey

VANCOUVER — Glad we didn't miss anything.
When last I worked, prior to my longest vacation since the summer of Grade 10 when I lost that plum dishwashing job at Mr. Jakes, an eatery in Richmond similar in name and style to Mr. Mikes but minus the suave cache, the local sports universe crackled with chatter about the cheap nfl jerseys
Vancouver Canucks' captaincy and the B.C. Lions' winlessness at Empire Field.
Six weeks later, nothing has changed.
Next thing you'll tell me is Gordon Campbell is still premier.
The Lions, who crammed two road wins into their summer, try again Saturday to win outdoors in Vancouver for the first time since 1982.
And the Canucks could end the captain's debate next week when Roberto Luongo(notes) arrives ahead of training camp.
Henrik Sedin(notes) tried to quell the discussion Tuesday but failed badly, partly because he only says stuff but doesn't actually write newspaper stories or file radio reports. Maybe Sedin should just get a blog like everyone else.
Until the Canucks begin their great salary-cap limbo and jettison a player or two before the National Hockey League regular season begins, the 'C' and whether a finely-tuned, highly-sensitive starting goalie is the best player to possess it, could dominate training camp.
“It's nothing I want to talk about because we have a captain and he's been great for the team,” Sedin insisted Tuesday after most of Vancouver's top players mustered for the first time at the Canucks' arena. “All his teammates are supporting him and know what he brings. There's nothing for me to talk about.”
Nice try, Hank. The Sedins have been here 10 years now; you think they'd know the market by now.
“We support him,” Daniel Sedin(notes) said of Luongo. “He's been there for us. He's been a good leader, as good a captain as I ever had. If he doesn't feel he can do it or he needs to focus on his game, that's up to him. From the players' perspective, he's our leader and he's going to keep being our leader, too, if he chooses to step down.”
Asked if the captaincy should be entirely Luongo's decision, Daniel said “of course.”
And Canuck management feels the same way. That's why they sent Luongo into the summer with a couple of nudges and a wink and instructions to think hard about his role and decide if his leadership really requires the validation of the 'C' and all the baggage it brings, Indianapolis Colts jersey
evident in the encumbered captain's refusal during another sub-par playoffs last spring to speak with reporters the morning of games.
The goaltender-as-captain has been a failed experiment by general manager Mike Gillis and coach Alain Vigneault, but they'd desperately rather Luongo be the one to end it by gracefully relinquishing his letter.
So far, he still has it. Upon his return from Sweden, Henrik discovered only the newly-minted replicas of the Hart and Ross trophies he won last season but not the captaincy he could carry a lot more lightly than does Luongo.
But the goaltender's fierce pride and stubbornness — Luongo worked out in Florida during the summer with Ian Clark, whom Gillis fired in June as part of his attempt to bring the goaltending position back under team rule — makes surrendering the captaincy more difficult.
If Luongo insists on keeping it, the Canucks may yield once again to his wishes although Gillis demonstrated his willingness to terminate failed experiments when Ryan Walter, hand-picked by the GM two years ago, was dismissed as assistant coach in August.
The Sedins are the least of the Canucks' problems.
Regardless of letters — and remember, Daniel didn't even regularly have an 'A' last season — the elite twins hold themselves to a higher level of accountability than any other Canucks. Four points or minus-four, win or lose, the Sedins await the media's arrival after every game to answer for themselves and their team.
“Everyone should do that,” Daniel said Tuesday. “It can be tough after games when you've had a tough game. [But] if you're there when you play good, you've got to be there when you play bad.”
The Sedins are “team” players in every sense.
While Henrik will be questioned daily about the unlikeliness of Dallas Cowboys jersey
defending his scoring title or amassing another 112 points, his far greater concern is helping the Canucks get past the second round of the playoffs.
“We have to put points aside,” he said. “We have to start looking at the team and making the playoffs and then go further in the playoffs. That's how I feel.”
